Smalls and Cheeto

Guest post from Stephanie Caruthers from Southern Wag Pet Accessories

I always grew up in a house with a variety of pets. Dogs, cats, ferrets, hedgehogs, a rat, a parrot, hamsters, and even a snake at one time. When I finished college and moved out, I was in a small apartment and big dogs were not a feasible option at that time. We adopted Smalls first. He was at a small shelter in Ingleside, Texas. He was about 3 months old and recently given up by a family that did not want to move with him. Well, he was a perfect fit in our family from the moment he came home.smalls02

About 6 months later I went back to the same shelter and found our second cat Cheeto. He is probably the best cat I could ever ask for. He is a complete love bug. Smalls and Cheeto became best buds immediately and since then they have been apart of our family and the military life we live. Since my husband is in the Navy we move every 2-3 years. Since we adopted them in 2007 they have moved from Texas to Guam and now we are in Japan. Soon we will be making the trip back to the states so they are officially world travelers!

Having two house cats that are getting a little older seems to be a bit of a challenge at times to keep them active. We have a few feather toys, little jingle balls and of course the laser pointer! The laser pointer will get Cheeto going in circles and up and down the stairs quite a bit. Smalls prefers to jump at it and jump up and down off the couch to get it. Smalls will actually start to pant because he is so excited and working so hard. To keep both of them on the slimmer side we feed a high quality food and in portions.
Free feeding is an enemy of cats and dogs. Having scheduled feedings also gives everyone a little structure in their day. When they are not playing around or eating they are snuggling together on the couch or stealing the dog bed to nap on.

  1. Great story, and I love that they travel since I am a traveling dog. Mom likes that they match. She is big on all of us matching.
