Do Cats Smile?

funny kitten portrait with smile on card
Dear Tabby,

We always see lots of posts about dogs smiling or laughing. But what about cats – do they smile?

Dear Smiler,

Good question. Since we don’t have a lot of experience with cats, we looked to the internet for some evidence. We found a lot of Grumpy Cats…but we found this collection of smiling cats too.

We also found a few articles that tell us that while cats don’t smile in a traditional way, they do use every part of their body to tell us how they are feeling. Purring, rubbing against you, twinkling eyes and a slow swishing tail are all signs that a cat is content and happy.

  1. Dogs definitely smile, but cats…I think not so much. Maybe because they are so busy sleeping all the time?

  3. Cats do smile. Usually an evil smile. My boys always look like they have a smile on their faces.

  4. Cats don’t smile, they snicker…they laugh AT you, not WITH you. Cats are discerning. They save their “smiles” for those who deserve it. That’s just one of a zillion reasons why I adore cats (I love my dog but relate much better to my cat). Cats aren’t “in your face” they have better things to do……… 🙂

  6. Smile? Not sure. But frown? Oh, yeah! They sure can let you know they’re displeased with a facial expression. 🙂

  7. Some of those smiling cats looked more like they were grimacing to me! 🙂 We definitely get a lot more grumpy looks around here. Our cat Don Juan used to have a grumpy expression which we jokingly called his “happy look”!
