Dear Tabby: Helping Bert

deartabbyOver at SlimDoggy we have Dear Labby for all our food, fitness, training and weight management questions. Here at SlimKitty, we have Dear Tabby to provide the same advice, from a cat’s point of view.

Dear Tabby’s first challenge is to provide some weight management tips to Bert, our food obsessed cat.

Dear Bert,

Tubby tabbies are no good, especially when the rest of your family is so fit and trim. I know you love to eat and food can be so yummy. We know your mom is pretty conscientious, but here’s a couple of tips that might help:

  • DON’T free feed. If your starving all the time, feed multiple times per day – the same amount, just spread out over the day so you don’t get so hungry.
  • Increase the protein and decrease the carbohydrates. If you’re on a special diet, check with your vet on this one.
  • Read the labels and measure the food accurately. Lots of people overfeed because they don’t measure
  • Exercise, exercise, exercise.

Here’s a few other resources that might be helpful:

Good Luck!
Dear Tabby

  1. Impt to remember not to free feed, I am going to keep that in mind as I better regulate my tabby’s diet, love this site!

  2. Great tips! When I had 6 cats in the house I free fed and I was lucky enough now to have any obese cats, I did have one that could stand to loose a pound or two but for the most part all were at a good weight or skinny. This is not the case now that I am down to one cat. A new cat that is going to be a year old soon. She is solid and she needs to go to measured amounts of food now as I don’t want her to get over weight. It is so much easier to keep them slim than to try and loose that extra weight in a cat.

  3. We stopped free feeding after a year. Bert eats twice a day. I think he needs to take up jogging!

  4. We used to free feed years ago….until we ended up with one very fat cat and that was the end of that, we’ve never done it since! We put a measured amount into a bowl in the morning for Sam, and then dump small amounts into another bowl each time….she might eat multiple times but it’s only a little at a time.

    • As long as you measure it, I think that’s what’s important to keep them trim.
